4Vitamix? Yes!... This model? Maybe...
By Jackytar
First of all, let me join the others in saying that this appliance can truly be life-changing and I should have purchased it years ago. If you are considering this blender to eat healthier by adding fruits, vegetables and other natural, nutritious foods to your daily diet then don't wait. In just couple of weeks I have learned the basics and use my Vitamix at least once daily. I've lost weight and feel better, and I eat out just for the convenience much less. The ingredients to make a smoothie and many other recipes keep well in the fridge and freezer and it is easy and economical to have a healthy meal at hand. However, this particular Vitamix may be over-kill for most. You pay around an extra $100 for the 3 presets over the 5200 model but they only add a small measure of convenience in my experience. The hot soup setting doesn't make the soup all that hot. I made a small batch of tomato soup and I had to transfer it to the stove for warming before serving. In other words, without the preset you would just turn the blender off when the soup is the desired consistency and then warm it on the stove OR you would keep it going in the blender past the preset time until the soup is hot enough (an oddly inelegant way to warm soup). The preset offers little to no benefit. The frozen dessert setting is even less useful. You have to stand over the appliance with the tamper while making a frozen dessert so adjusting the speed and duration of the blender can be done on the fly. Even the smoothie setting is only marginally helpful. If you like your smoothies somewhat thick, as I do, you are going to be watching the blender to make sure it doesn't "cavitate", so to speak (create an air pocket around the spinning blade). If things look good and/or your smoothie recipe always blends well you can walk away and, say, put things back into the fridge but it's not like you are going to another part of your house to do something while your smoothie is being made on the preset button. It only takes a few seconds. Or, maybe you do see yourself going to another part of your house to multitask during the few seconds it takes to blend your smoothie. Then this model is the only one for you. None of the other Vitamix models turn off automatically unless, of course, they overheat. For the rest of us, and especially if you are on a tight budget, I would suggest a more inexpensive Vitamix, perhaps with the variable speed control or even with the much cheaper two-speed control which, I would say, is 95% as useful and effective as this model. The slow speed starts things off by chopping and mixing the larger chunks of food without flinging it all suddenly and violently to the top and the sides of the jar (which makes the rest of the blending cycle difficult to eyeball) and the fast speed finishes the job nice and smoothly. What more do you want? This is essentially what the presets do on this model. Slow then fast then stop. The only difference between the 3 presets seems to be in the duration of the slow and fast steps. The speed of the fast and slow steps sounds the same from one preset to the next. You do get a very brief "ramping up" in the speed with the presets - not sure if the two-speed model does this or even if this makes any difference. The recipe book that comes with this item and some of the other more expensive Vitamix models is very nice with a fancy binder and all but there are a go-zillion recipes available online to include the Vitamix website. Plus many of the recipes in the book call for exotic ingredients that you are unlikely to bother with. It will almost assuredly become so much more kitchen clutter. And the included DVD just covers the basics. There are more comprehensive videos on the vitamix website. More clutter. These things are a common marketing ploy to up the price and profit margin. I fell for it. You don't have to.Offering the presets on this model is obviously a response to the Blendtec blender - Vitamix's main competitor and tormentor - who flog their presets and other "improvements" over the Vitamix in their promotional material. My friend has the Blendtec which he loves and I did a lot of hand-wringing over which brand to buy. In the end I am glad I bought the Vitamix and here's why... First of all - the tamper! (Of course.) One of my early favorite recipes to make in the Vitamix is sorbet. A cup of milk, a bit of sweetener, a dash of vanilla extract and a full pound of frozen fruit. Because of the large percentage of frozen fruit in this recipe, you must force the mixture into the blade with the tamper throughout the entire blending cycle. It has the consistency of, well, sorbet and there is no possible way the Blendtec can pull this off. I think it's true that the Blendtec design does more effectively pull ingredients into the blades as compared to the Vitamix making the tamper unnecessary in many circumstances. You can see this in some of the side-by-side comparisons on youtube. But what does this matter when the Blendtec will also "cavitate" when the mixture is thick or chunky enough? The tamper on the Vitamix offers a safe and easy remedy in this situation and allows you to finesse your recipe in a manner not available with the Blendtec. Secondly, I am partial to the old fashioned "analogue" controls. Nice big buttons with clear purpose and a quality feel. Lastly, the Vitamix has a long standing and enthusiastic following amongst professional chefs and, well, I like iconic things. It's the only professional blender you see on shows like Iron Chef. Silly, perhaps, but tried and true carries weight with me. The 64oz jar on the Blendtec does fit under a standard kitchen cabinet whereas this 64oz jar on the Vitamix does not which is a clear advantage you should consider. The Vitamix is a big and tall blender that demands some real estate in your kitchen. We've left the base on the counter and store the jar in a large drawer. Not an ideal situation but not a deal killer for us. If you have a suitable space on an open counter with an available outlet then all the better. Vitamix does sell a smaller smoothie-sized jar that will fit under a cabinet when stowed on the base but, you know, mo' money.

5The Rolls Royce of Blenders
By Roni Jordan
As I also posted on the Williams-Sonoma website, I had no qualms about spending $600 on this appliance after throughly researching reviews and videos and discussing with food pros. Am using at least 3x a day - hot soups, frozen fruit treats, dips, and smoothies and lassis to die for. So easy to use - no need to peel or remove seeds from fruits or vegetables. The 64-oz container is lightweight and easy to pour from; rubber lid snaps in tightly - no leakeage - and removes easily. It's important, for maximum effectiveness, to always put your wet ingredients in before the solid - this will prevent the solids from gumming up in the blades. As clearly stated in the accompanying recipe book - place the ingredients "in the order listed." Also a breeze to clean, and such a handsome addition to the kitchen counter - next to my Cuisinart, which is quickly becoming jealous from disuse. Not surprising that this is the blender used on Iron Chef - I keep freeze-framing on the TV image to reinforce my happy decision. Made in the USA and with a 7-year warranty, I expect this to provide many years of daily use. To close - I will provide my own recipe for a Mango Ginger Lassi (so refreshing) - 1 cup low-fat Kefir, 2/3 cup frozen mango chunks, 1 thin slice fresh ginger root unpeeled, 2 tsp turbinado sugar or honey, pinch of cardamom. Blend on smoothie setting. Serve in a wine goblet for best enjoyment.

5Believe it or not, it IS worth it IF you use it!
By AZMIKE
Never thought we would spend this kind of money for a mixer/blender! But we did and love it!! Use it everyday for smoothies, salad dressings, frozen desserts etc etc. It is a workhorse and works as advertised. Saves a lot of time. We grate parmesan cheese and its perfect every time. Margaritas, fresh peanut butter..I could go on and on or maybe I have. Haha. Anyway, if in your budget, buy it.
