Product Description

Blender is a powerful and free 3D graphics tool used by artists and designers worldwide. But even experienced designers can find it challenging to turn an idea into a polished piece.

For those who have struggled to create professional quality projects in Blender, author Ben Simonds offers this peek inside his studio. You'll learn how to create 3D models as you explore the creative process that he uses to model three example projects: a muscular bat creature, a futuristic robotic spider, and ancient temple ruins. Along the way, you'll master the Blender interface and learn how to create and refine your own models.

You'll also learn how to:

  • Work with reference and concept art in Blender and GIMP to make starting projects easier
  • Block in models with simple geometry and build up more complex forms
  • Use Blender's powerful sculpting brushes to create detailed organic models
  • Paint textures with Blender and GIMP and map them onto your 3D artwork
  • Design textures in GIMP and map them onto your 3D artwork
  • Light, render, and composite your models to create striking images
Each chapter walks you through a piece of the modeling process and offers detailed explanations of the tools and concepts used. Filled with full-color artwork and real-world tips, Blender Master Class gives you the foundation you need to create your own stunning masterpieces.

Supplementary download includes files for each project in the book, as well as extra textures, brushes, and other resources.

Covers Blender 2.6x

5The place to start with Blender... Simply Awesome!!!
By T. Anderson
Blender is a beast. At least to a guy like me that is usual in code and not in user interface tools. Sure I use Xcode, Eclipse, and Visual Studio but they just give me a place to code. I have used Photoshop, GIMP, and Expression Studio which make you depend on the tools available but Blender is in a class of its own.I have downloaded it in the past around the time Big Buck Bunny was first released. I spent a few weeks playing with it, but got nowhere. This book convinced me to take another crack at it and I am really glad I did.The book starts off with an introduction to Blender and a short introduction to GIMP. GIMP is another powerful open source tool the author uses for 2D image editing throughout the book. For a great book on GIMP check out The Book of GIMP: A Complete Guide to Nearly Everything.I have listed all the chapters below to give you an idea of all the high level topics covered. Each chapter is packed with tons of information.1. Introduction to Blender2. Introduction to GIMP3. Preparation4. Blocking In5. Modeling the Details6. Sculpting7. Retopology8. UV Unwrapping9. Hair and Particle Systems10. Texture Baking11. Texture Painting12. Materials13. Lighting14. Rendering and Compositing15. Going FurtherI had Blender open almost the entire time I read the book. It took a little longer to get through because I kept getting sidetracked trying different things, and wanted to be in front of a computer with Blender on it, but I think it was worth it.Blender really is an amazing tool and I know the author said they have made great improvements to the user interface to make it more intuitive, but I would still be lost in it without a book like this.Without this book I would have never figured out how to do sculpting correctly or work with particle systems and paint textures. This book goes into some really advanced modelling techniques, which makes this book great for both the beginner and the advanced user. The book sticks to creating, texturing, and rendering models as still images. It does not cover the rigging and animation tools, simulation tools, or the game engine. That takes nothing away from the book and actually makes it better. Focusing on creating, texturing, and rendering models as still images the author is able to go in depth on a massive amount of topics. The book comes with some awesome examples. Without them I probably would have not have learned as much as I did. It was pretty cool to see how powerful Blend is and how awesome the results of using it correctly can be. The author does some really cool stuff. The author's writing style also made the very complex tools easier to understand. The book is written like he is there in the room with you helping you learn and showing you how to work through the steps of creating still images. This book has literally opened up a whole new world of creative possibilities. I now have Blender open every chance I get.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn about Blender, or anyone working with Blender at any level.

5Really good Blender Book
By Joe D. Thomas
I have the iPad version as well as the book. The book has not arrived yet. The Ipad version is wonderful. Finally, publishers are taking some advantage of the possibilities of digital books. The pictures are not part of the text, but instead are embedded and independent. So, when an illustration is required, I can enlarge it to the full screen size of the iPad. This makes seeing the illustrations really clear and very nice. This book may be a little advanced for me. I scanned the entire thing and I am intimidated by its depth. As a beginner (2 years), the instructions may not be cookie cutter enough. But, the author intended that and makes it clear from the start. I think this book will be very helpful, and with an excellent index with hypertext, it will be a useful reference as well.

5Fantastic book for people new to Blender and 3D design
By C. Avampato
Design skills are quickly becoming a part of the necessary knowledge base of professionals in a wide variety of fields. Plenty of courses, online and off, free and fee-based, are cropping up to demystify the process of design. Open source design software is also paving the way to help us evolve from media consumers into media creators. If 3D design is on your wish list of skills, you're in luck. Blender is an incredibly popular open source 3D design suite with a massive user community. No Starch Press has just published the book Blender Master Class by author and professional 3D artist Ben Simonds. The book guides you step-by-step through 3 intricate projects by teaching you modeling, sculpting, materials, and rendering skills. The book also explains how Blender interfaces with GIMP, an open source graphic design program, and includes a DVD with all of the relevant files for the projects described in the book.Simonds makes Blender, a sophisticated program, approachable by breaking down its basic features one by one. Blender is used by many artists for animation, simulation, and game design. However, these features are not covered in this book. Simonds focused his efforts on the niche that needed to be filled - helping new Blender users understand the basics of creating still images. With this book you can quickly get started on the task of getting those 3D designs out of your imagination and into the world. While Blender can feel overwhelming at first because of all of its bells and whistles, you'll have Simonds with you on every step of the journey as a guide and supporter.
